About Us

Darcy HoffertMaritime Log House Restoration was formed in response to a need for a professional approach to maintaining and preserving the many log buildings in the Maritimes.

Since February 2016, it is owned and operated by Darcy Hoffert (photo left), who continues to work together with founder Rick McMahon (photo below).

Company History

Rick McMahon founded the company in 2008 under the name Rick McMahon Forest Products. The name was changed in 2013 to Maritime Log House Restoration.

Rick's experience in the log building industry began in 1979 with a short course in log house construction taught by B. Allen Mackie from Prince George, B.C. Through the early 1980's, Rick and Cathy built their own log home in Victoria Harbour on the Bay of Fundy shoreline in Kings County, N.S., and Rick worked with friends on several projects.

In 1984, Rick joined forces with fellow logmen, Roger Ellis and Mike Coyle to incorporate Roger's company, Heartwood Log Homes. For 24 years, Roger, Mike and Rick enjoyed building beautiful handcrafted log homes in Margaretville, N.S., and assembling them throughout Atlantic Canada and the Eastern U.S.

In 2008, Rick chose to leave Heartwood and devote his time and energy to preserve this legacy. We recommend that you contact for new construction of a well-built and sensibly designed handcrafted log home.

Log houses have been built in the Maritimes since the first Europeans landed on our shoreline and needed shelter. Not many of these early homes have survived but those that are still standing have been consistently maintained and repaired when necessary. Since the spring of 2008, Rick has been "on the road" all over Atlantic Canada restoring and maintaining many styles of log buildings. Every project is unique but they all share some basic similarities.

This experience "in the field" is combined with common sense problem solving to find solutions to difficult problems or to simply preserve and maintain your log home. There is something new to be learned from every project as we continue to study and work in the field of restoration and repair of log homes.

As owner of an existing company, Seaworthy Construction, Darcy has 25 years of carpentry and timber framing experience and he has a keen interest in log building restoration in the Maritimes. Darcy and Rick continue to work together to present the best service possible.

It is Rick's intention to remain in the industry as a consultant and log building inspector.
